MW-TEST
The File Ownership Test Program
(c) 1993 Dana Consultants
(800) 800-9301 or (703) 620-3554
The purpose of the MW-TEST program is to show you how an unowned file can
effect your network. MW-TEST will create a user, then a file, change the
owner of the file to the new user, then delete the user (causing the file
to be "unowned"), and then start writing to the file.
When the file hits the end of it's sector, an error will occur. This error
is usually reported as a DISK FULL error by applications.
This problem can be most hazardous to servers which use databases. If a
database becomes "unowned", writes to that file may be aborted. This can
cause such problems as data loss or file corruption. (Not to mention some
angry users!)
To use the MW-TEST program you must:
a) Login as a SUPERVISOR or equivalent user
b) Change to a network drive
c) Execute the MW-TEST program
By using Dana Consultant's MWATCH NLM product you can protect yourself from
unowned files on your network. Refer to the MWATCH documentation for more
information.
